The Kylaq, a small SUV, has been unveiled by Skoda India, and its ex-showroom starting price is Rs 7.89 lakh. The Czech company, Skoda, hopes to achieve success by starting small with the Kylaq. This is Skoda’s smallest SUV to date, the Kylaq, which is the Czech automaker’s attempt to reach one million units sold annually in India. The India 2.0 initiative gave rise to the Kushaq and Slavia, which in 2022 drove sales to a record 53,721 units.

To begin with, the Kylaq name. The name, which honours Mount Kailash and means “crystal” in Sanskrit, is chosen from more than two million entries submitted in a pan-India contest. The Czech Republic is known for its crystal.

The new age of styling Skoda with components of the company’s most recent “Modern Solid” design aesthetic. The frontal lighting, for example, has distinct indications of the Kushaq, with which the Kylaq has many other features, and the lines are clean throughout. With LED projector headlights below and an LED DRL arrangement above, the Kylaq has the popular split headlamp design. The prominent creases on the bonnet lend muscle up front, and the Skoda grille, which is thinner than the Kushaq’s, rests proudly on the fascia. The front end also seems two-toned thanks to the bumper’s generous covering, and a lower spoiler with an aluminum appearance provides some contrast.

When viewed directly, the Kylaq can be mistaken for a modernized Kushaq.

The differences actually come through in profile. The Kylaq sits on an 85mm shorter wheelbase (it measures 2,566mm) and is a full 230mm shorter end-to-end, with an overall length of 3,995mm.

Yes, it is much smaller, but the Kylaq still has a tighter appearance and good proportions. The Kylaq seems very sizable by compact SUV standards, whilst the Kushaq has always appeared smaller than its immediate mid-size SUV competitors. Its wheelbase is really second only to that of the Mahindra XUV 3XO. There is enough ground clearance (189mm).

Roof rails and paneling at the base of the doors give the Kylaq the necessary SUV-ness, while top models stand tall on 17-inch wheels. The doors have simpler lines, apparently to save stamping costs, but the shoulder line, which leads to the large C-pillar and tail lights, has a lovely flair. The tiny, squared-out tail lights suggest the Audi Q2 with squared-out tail lamps that sport a distinctive T-shaped lighting signature. The tail lights are linked by a dark applique with Skoda lettering, and there’s thick cladding on the rear bumper too. Overdone or not, it does help give the Kylaq an exclusive look.
