How To Score Good In English Board Exam?

CBSE Class 10th and 12th exams have started already and on February 26, the English Language and Literature exam will be held.

English is considered one of the most favourite and popular subjects among students being a high scoring paper. On the strategy to score well in the English Exam, we talked to Ms Pratibha, TGT English, Govt. Co. Ed. Senior Secondary School – Laxmi Bai Nagar, Delhi.

Ms Pratibha shared some important tips to score well for the Class 10th Board Exam.

CBSE Board Exam, 2024: English Hacks

English (Language and Literature) Paper is divided into three sections; Section A – Reading Skills, Section B- Grammer and Writing Skills, Section C is Literature that is text book and supplementary readings. To score well in all the 3 sections Keep these points in Mind.

Focus on Key Words: In Section A, we have two types of unseen passages, Discursive Passage and Case-Based Passage of 10 Marks Each. The Tip is that we must read the unseen passage quickly at a glance read the questions, compare the questions with the unseen passage given, and observe the matching words in the passage with the question. You will surely get the answers. It may be directly written or hidden. Try to locate the keywords.

To practice unseen passages, it is advisable for students to practice Previous Year Questions (PYQs) given on the CBSE website. You may also see the solutions provided on the CBSE website. Do practice them, it will help students to solve questions quickly and correctly.

Structuring is Important: In the second section which is grammar, the first section has a writing part with a formal letter of 5 marks and an analytical paragraph of 5 marks. The writing section is of 10 marks. Good marks can be obtained by practicing and following a prescribed format, body practice, and PYQ practice.

For an analytical paragraph, you must use keywords in analytical paragraph, focus on language and phrases in the paragraph.

The Grammar section which is of 10 marks focuses on tenses, modals, subject-verb agreement, and other important topics. This section is important to score and crack full marks in the exam as it is comprised of MCQs and fill-ups.

Think and Brainstorming: For the supplementary section which has both objective and subjective questions from prose and poetry. Here short and long questions of 3 markers and 6 markers are asked to assess the interpretation, evaluation, analysis, vocabulary, and extrapolation skills of candidates.

Students should focus on practicing Previous Year Questions or Other Model Papers for this section to think and brainstorm.

Read Deeply: Literature section which carries the highest weightage of 40 marks and is most known for being highest scoring. Students are familiar with this section because of the two textbook questions, and good knowledge of story and poetry.

For this section, students are advised to prepare Short Notes, Make a Summary of stories and poetry in 10 points, Prepare Mind maps of sections of prose and poetry, and Make character sketches and key aspects.

Questions are asked from the Main characters. Long question and contrast questions are asked to compare different topics, different chapters, and between characters.

For this section, students are advised to prepare a List of Poems, Names of Poets, Rhymes Schemes, and Poetic Devices used in the poem for reference.

A full and Deep understanding of the Story of Prose section and Poems in detail is crucial to gaining good marks. Students should have a gist of every story and poem.
