Madhya Pradesh government is all set to introduce the ‘Happiness Curriculum’ for Classes 9-12 in the forthcoming academic session.

What does this curriculum comprise and what is its intention?

The Happiness curriculum focuses on a framework that includes understanding happiness beyond worldly success, inculcating self-awareness, and instilling harmony in relationships with oneself, family, society, and nature through activity-based learning, a report by Indian Express denotes.

The Curriculum for Class 9 comprises 11 chapters and it deals with examination on happiness as a holistic experience through modes such as storytelling, group discussions, and reflection to teach students that happiness surpasses material aspects and necessitates ethical thinking for holistic living. Also, the module gives importance on self-awareness, motivate students to observe their thoughts, feelings, and actions through self-analysis and group activities intends to attain clarity and alignment in their behaviour.

In Class 10, the module aims to include self-awareness to deepen one’s understanding, directing students to observe their thoughts, feelings, and actions through contemplation. It also communicates the misapprehension of viewing humans as merely physical, and teaches that meeting both the self’s and body’s needs is vital to attain true harmony.

Similarly, the class 11 curriculum handles harmony in family relationships, emphasising on values like love, care, and gratitude. Besides, it includes chapters that “deepens the understanding of happiness and prosperity”, critiquing misconceptions such as happiness from material facilities or others’ approval, the report adds.

The Class 12 curriculum introduces nature as a collection of conscious and material units, and these chapters deals with “existence as coexistence, teaching that all units are immersed in space, inherently harmonious, and interconnected,” Indian Express quotes, as said in the curriculum.

The State government is introducing the Happiness Curriculum as a mandatory subject for all streams in Classes 9 to 12. With no formal examinations, it will give importance on process-oriented learning through activities like mindfulness exercises, reflective storytelling, and group discussions.

The state is investing heavily in teacher training to expand the programme. As per the Indian Express report, in May 2025, 14 workshops will train 3,000 teachers, with a goal to prepare 4,000 educators to lead Anand Classes (happiness periods) in government-run educational institutions.
