As row over the irregularities in top examinations continues to spiral, the counselling for National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2024 has been postponed until further notice today. The decision to delay the counselling, which was originally scheduled for July 6, came as the Supreme Court is set to hear the case related to the NEET allegations on July 8.
The exam authorities want to wait for the Supreme Court hearing in the case, which is scheduled for July 8, India Today reported, citing sources.

However, the Medical Counselling Committee did not share more details about the schedule for NEET-UG Counselling. The National Testing Agency (NTA), which is under fire now, had previously told the Supreme Court that the counselling process would start on July 6, 2024.
After the declaration of the NEET UG examination on June 4, the NTA, which conducts the country’s highest examinations, including the NEET and UGC-NET, among others, came under scrutiny. Protests erupted across the country directed at the alleged inefficient handling of examinations by the NTA and the Union Education Ministry.

Thousands of students took to the streets, demanding the cancellation of the exam and an investigation into the alleged paper leak incidents. Notably, the confession of several students that they received question papers the day before the examination further escalated the infuriated student’s frustration, pushing the government to take stringent measures.

Following pressure, the central government removed the NTA chief and handed over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The central investigating agency has arrested several people in connection with the alleged malpractices and question paper leaks.
Several states also took measures to address the students’ concerns. While the Uttar Pradesh government passed an ordinance implementing strict punishment for violators of exam integrity, Kerala and Tamil Nadu passed resolutions, demanding a comprehensive probe and the cancellation of the NEET-UG exam, respectively.
