New Delhi: Delhi to go to polls in a single phase on February 5. The counting of the votes will take place on February 8. The schedule for Delhi polls was released at a press conference on Tuesday (January 7) by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar along with other senior poll officials.

“It is a single-phase election… We have deliberately kept polling on a Wednesday so more people come out to vote… like we did in Maharashtra,” Rajiv Kumar said.

The national capital comprise 70 assembly constituencies. The current term of the Assembly ends on February 23. Traditionally, Delhi witnesses assembly election in a single phase.

The CEC has expressed confidence that Delhi will vote “dil se” (by heart). Election Commission will monitor social media and respond swiftly to fake news, said Kumar.

He said that India will soon create a new record of more than one billion voters. “Electoral rolls were released yesterday. We are crossing 99 crore voters… We are going to be a nation of one billion voters very soon, which will be another record in voting,” CEC said.

Focusing attention on the concerns raised on electoral roll manipulation, EVM, voter turnout and counting, poll body chief said that they have given answers in written and in-person. “Due process is followed in deletions or additions of names in electoral rolls,” said Kumar.  Continuing further, he said that EVMs undergo scrutiny at every stage, and dismissed tampering allegations “baseless”.

Delhi Assembly elections will witness a triangular fight between the BJP, Congress and Aam Aadmi Party. The AAP is aiming for a third consecutive term this time.

In the 2020 Assembly polls, AAP secured a massive victory, winning 62 out of 70 seats, while BJP won 8 seats. However, the Congress failed to secure any seats in the election.
