On Monday, BJP leader and former Union Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh and his wife Prem Lata resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and are set to rejoin the Congress. The resignation comes nearly a month after their son, Brijendra Singh, resigned from the Lok Sabha as a BJP candidate and joined the Congress. The official announcement is expected to come tomorrow.

During a press conference in Delhi, Singh announced that he and his wife had sent their resignations to party chief JP Nadda and that the two would be joining Congress tomorrow. Prem Lata Singh has served as the BJP MLA from 2014 until 2019, representing the Uchana Kalan assembly constituency in Haryana. Singh had served as the Union Minister of Steel and Minister for Rural Development under the NDA government from 2016 to 2019.

After nearly dedicating forty years, Singh severed ties with Congress to join the saffron party in the presence of Amit Shah, then party president, in 2014. In 2023, Mr. Singh gave an ultimatum to the party during a rally in Jind, wherein he stated that he would leave the party if it continued an alliance with Haryana’s Deputy Chief Minister’s Dushyant Chautala’s Jannayak Janata Party (JJP).

Five months later, Singh’s son quit the BJP. And two days later, the BJP severed all ties with the JJP.

The father-son duo had previously extended their solidarity with the farmers during the farmers protests against the now repealed farm laws. During the protests by wrestlers against the former Chief of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh, the two politicians extended their support to the wrestlers.

On March 10, Brijendra Singh resigned as MP, citing compelling political reasons. The former IAS officer later joined the Congress in the presence of party president Mallikarjun Kharge, senior leaders Ajay Maken, Deepak Babaria, and Mukul Wasnik.
