The first collaboration between actor Chiyaan Vikram and director Pa Ranjith’s Thangalaan hits the silver screens today. An ensemble cast of Parvathy Thiruvothu, Daniel Caltagirone, Malavika Mohanan, and more has already created buzz, but the highlight of the film is its story.

Based on a real-life incident that happened at the Kolar Gold Factory (KGF) in Karnataka under British rule. The film explores the unexplored history of Tamil Nadu’s Dalits and how they mined and created the KGF.

Vikram plays the role of the ‘Son of Gold,’ and the story is centred around a tribal leader’s fight against those conspiring to snatch their land to mine gold.

“When someone asks us, who built the Taj Mahal or the Thanjavur Peruvudaiyar Koil, who do we remember? We remember King Shah Jahan and Raja Raja Chola. But in reality, it was built by poor and marginalised people,” said Thamizh Prabha, the person behind the screenplay and dialogue writer, in an interview with The Hindu.

The period action drama focuses on the themes of struggle and resistance and offers a social commentary on those whose hard work and sweat is often omitted in the pages of history.

Thangalaan is also special due to Vikram’s insane transformation for the character. “The effort that went into Thangalaan is unparalleled. I’ve worked hard and strained every nerve for this film. It’s something entirely different compared to my other films,” observed the actor.
