Veteran director Bharathiraja’s son and actor Manoj Bharathiraja passed away yesterday evening at his residence in Besant Nagar due to a heart attack. The actor’s demise at the age of 48 left not only his family but also the entire Tamil film industry and fans in deep sorrow.

Many celebrities, including Vijay, Suriya, Karthi, Karthik Subraj, Prabhu, Seeman and others, visited his home and paid their last respects to the actor. Cinema stars personally visited to console a heartbroken Bharathiraja.

The Cinematic Journey of Manoj Bharathiraja

Before becoming an actor, Manoj studied theatre arts at the University of South Florida. He made his acting debut in 1999 with the film Taj Mahal, directed by his father and director Bharathiraja.

Although, the soundtrack and the background score of the film, composed by AR Rahman, received good reception from the audience, the film turned out to be a box office failure.

Apart from the leading role, he also appeared in supporting roles in some of the blockbuster films, such as Samuthiram (2001), alongside Sarath Kumar and Murali, and in Kadal Pookkal (2001), directed by his father, reuniting with Murali once again. He is also known for his films such as Varushamellam Vasantham (2002) and Pallavan (2003).

His recent films include Vaaimai (2016), Champion (2019), Eeswaran (2021), Maanadu (2021). He was last seen in actor Karthi’s 2022 film Viruman.

Manoj Bharathiraja as an Assistant Director

Apart from acting, Manojalso extended his passion for cinema by working as an assistant director. He worked as an assistant director with various renowned filmmakers of Tamil cinema, namely, Mani Ratnam in Bombay (1995) and Shankar in Enthiran (2010). His contributions to Tamil cinema, both in front of and behind the camera, have left a significant impact on the industry.

Manoj Bharathiraja’s Directorial Journey

In 2023, Manoj made his directorial debut with Margazhi Thingal (2023), a film produced by his father. The movie explored themes of love and tradition, earning appreciation for its story-telling. The film stars Bharathiraja, Suseenthiran, Shyam Selvan and Rakshana in the lead roles.

Manoj Bharathiraja’s Personal Life

In his personal life, Manoj married his long time friend and Tamil actress Nandana on 19 November 2006. She was his co-star in the film Saadhuriyan (2005). Their wedding ceremony was held at Ashirwad Marriage Hall at Kozhikode in Kerala, the native of Nandana. The couple has two daughters, Arthika and Mathivadani.
