Why Is Delhi Vulnerable For Earthquakes?
The capital city has experienced earthquakes and tremors occasionally for years. According to the experts, the dense population, high-rise construction, and unplanned urban sprawl make the city susceptible to serious environmental damage, potentially causing a huge impact in the event of major earthquakes.
The city is also sensitive to earthquakes due to its proximity to the Himalayas, triggering seismic stress and fault lines in the region and making it vulnerable to tremors. Further adding to the seismic activity, the capital region’s position on the Delhi-Haridwar Ridge, an extension of the Aravalli Mountain range, also adds a potential risk factor for earthquakes.
