The soft roof of the canopy situated outside the Rajkot airport’s passenger pickup and drop area collapsed today due to heavy rainfall in Gujarat.

This recent incident occurred a day after New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal-1’s tragic event which resulted in one fatality.

There are no reports of any injuries. The incident occurred at the passenger pickup and drop area outside the terminal.

On Friday, the weather office warned about a cyclonic circulation that is active over South Gujarat bringing widespread rains in parts of the state. It also added that the wet spell is expected to continue for the next five days.

On Saturday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘yellow alert’ for south Gujarat predicting the possibility of heavy showers. Amid the forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas, seven teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in Kutch, Rajkot, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Gir Somnath, Bhavnagar, Narmada, and Valsad districts.

The incident that took place at Terminal 1 of Indira Gandhi International Airport in the early hours which claimed the life of a 45-year-old cab driver, left eight others injured.

This has resulted in the suspension of operations from Terminal 1, which handles 200 flights a day. Delhi Airport, operated by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) said that a roof at the old departure forecourt of Terminal 1 partially collapsed around 5 am on Friday. The cause of the collapse is yet to be ascertained.

Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu has announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh to the family of the deceased and Rs 3 lakh each to those who have received minor injuries.

However, the Delhi police has registered an FIR under sections 304A (death by negligence) and 337 (causing hurt by Act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code.
