Cyclone Michaung Aftereffects: Actor Vijay Appeals Fans’ Association Members To Join Rescue Efforts

Although Cyclone Michaung moved northward and made landfall two days ago, several parts of Chennai are still reeling under the aftereffects of heavy rainfall, floods, and waterlogging. Reports indicate that many pockets within the coastal city are still inundated, and numerous people are facing issues with the non-availability of essential commodities, including water and food.

Social media is still flooded with requests for help from many who are still unable to move out of their places of stay, and in this context, Tamil superstar Vijay has appealed to the members of his fans’ association members to join the rescue efforts as volunteers and help the efforts of the government.

“There is news regularly coming on how thousands of people are in distress without drinking water, food and other basic necessities. There are several posts on social media seeking help to rescue them from flooded areas,” Thalapathy Vijay wrote in Tamil in his X (formerly Twitter) handle.

“In this situation, I urge people of welfare club members to volunteer to help those in need to what extent they can in the rescue missions undertaken by the government,” he appealed to the members of Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam on his post released on Wednesday late night.

On Wednesday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin visited the affected areas in Chennai and took stock of the affected areas and distributed basic necessities to rainfall-affected people.

Mr Stalin has also updated Chennai”s suburbs are still inundated due to the floodwaters. “Many people are working in the field to ensure that everyone gets basic necessities like food and milk. We are continuing our field work with the hope that the situation will improve soon,” the chief minister said.

The Tamilnadu government has postponed the half yearly exams scheduled in the schools including districts like Chennai, Thiruvallur and Kanchipuram.

Ten teams of National Disaster Response Force have already been in deployed in the capital city for rescue operation.

Earlier on Wednesday, Mr Stalin requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to release Rs.5060 crore as an interim relief to take up restoration activities in Cyclone-hit regions. Besides, Chief Minister urged the Prime Minister to send a central team to review the damages posed by the Cyclone in the state.

Addressing the Prime Minister, CM Stalin said on X that due to the Cyclonic storm, regions like Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Chengalpattu were adversely affected. He also added that state’s infrastructure has been severely hit, it is impacting lakhs and several are wrestling with floodwaters. Chief Minister also added that they are in the process of preparing a comprehensive report to assess the requirement for additional funds.
