Karnataka Woman Dies By Suicide After Husband Lost Rs 1.5 Crore In IPL Betting

Ranjitha, a 23-year-old woman from Karnataka died by suicide over the concerns of increasing debt her husband Darshan Babu incurred for the Indian Premier League (IPL) betting. Darshan Babu, an engineer who borrowed money for betting during the previous IPL seasons piled up an alleged Rs 1.5 crore betting debt.

Ranjitha is believed to have been hanged after facing harassment from the creditors. She was found hanging at her home in Karnataka’s Chitradurga. The police discovered a suicide note, detailing the intimidation she experienced.

Reportedly, Darshan Babu who is working as an assistant engineer in the Minor Irrigation Department at Hosadurga was drawn to the IPL betting since 2021. After marrying in 2020, Rajitha only knew her husband’s betting business in 2021, her father says. He has filed a complaint against the money lenders, noting that his daughter suffered extreme distress due to the harassment from the money lenders, The father also said that the situation led her to take her own life. In his complaint, Ranjitha’s father also named at least 13 men who lent the money to Darshan Babu. The police have arrested three persons in connection with the incident.

The family also alleged that they had negotiated with the lenders and thus agreed on repaying the debt. But the lenders still continued to threaten the couple, the family accused.

Talking about Darshan Babu, Ranjitha’s father said he was not interested in betting business and was lured into it promising quick money. He alleged that some suspects forced him, giving ill-advise towards an easy and quick way to be rich. “They promised to finance his betting activities against some blank cheques as security,” he added.

However, the betting had hit the financial capacity of the couple, with Mr Darshan borrowing over Rs 1,5 crore to place a bet after he lost all his money. The police say though he could take back Rs 1 crore, at least Rs 85 lakh remained as a pending loan.
