'No Grave Urgency': SC Rejects Plea For CBI Probe Into Activities Of Persons Linked To Cockroach Janta Party
New Delhi: Supreme Court on Monday, May 25, turned down an urgent hearing of a petition for an investigation into the activities of persons associated with the Cockroach Janta Party. The petitioner had sought urgent attention for the plea seeking Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation into the newly launched satirical social media movement.
The satirical political outfit was born out of chief justice of India Surya Kant’s controversial remark likening the unemployed youth of the country into cockroach. The Cockroach Janta Party immediately became an overnight sensation, gaining over 22 million followers on Instagram, turning out to be a Gen Z protest against the ruling dispensation for the menace of unemployment.
However, while hearing the petition, Advocate NK Goswami argued that the satirical outfit is tarnishing the image of judiciary. To which, a bench of chief justice and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and VM Pancholi replied, stating “Don’t take it so sentimentally.”
While another lawyer said that the petitioners are seeking a CBI probe into the issue of fake lawyer degrees, adding that courtroom exchanges cannot be used for commercial purposes, the top court responded, “There is no such grave urgency. We will see.”

The petitioner had also sought action against alleged commercial exploitation and monetised circulation of oral courtroom observations made during recent proceedings before the Supreme Court.
The controversial remark of CJI, ‘There are youngsters like cockroaches who are not getting employment in the profession. Some are on social media, some become RTI activists, and attack the system’ drew massive support for the satirical criticism against the chief justice. The CJI later clarified that his observations were directed at individuals entering professions through forged qualifications and fake degrees, not unemployed young Indians generally.
