“The Level Of Unemployment In India…”: Saket Gokhale Comments After Cabinet Approves Migration Agreement

Criticising the ‘Migration and Mobility Agreement’ approved by Cabinet on Wednesday, Rajya Sabha MP and Trinamool National spokesperson Saket Gokhale highlighted the rising issue of unemployment in India.

As per the newly signed agreement, the government had decided to send 12,000 non-seasonal workers and 8000 seasonal workers to Italy every year.

Expressing his view, Saket wrote on X, “The level of unemployment in India is SO BAD under the Modi Govt that we’re now exporting Indian laborers to other countries. Is this the sign of a “vishwaguru”?”

The ‘migration and mobility agreement’ approved by cabinet was signed between India and Italy, aiming to enhance people-to-people contacts and facilitate mobility of students, skilled workers and business professionals, reports Time of India.

The government after signing said, “agreement locks in the current Italian visa regime, including mechanisms for post-study opportunities, internships and professional trainings, assuring an advantage for India under existing labour mobility pathways…”

The issue of irregular migration was also formalised through the agreement. This pact will remain in force for a period of five years and will be automatically renewed for a similar successive period unless it is terminated by any participant.

For workers, the Italian side has reserved a quota of 5000, 6000 and 7,000 for non-seasonal Indian workers for 2023, 2024, and 2025 under the Current Flow Decree. While for non-seasonal workers, Italy has reserved a quota of 3,000, 4,000 and 5,000 for 2023, 2024 and 2025.

The bilateral relationship between India and Italy has witnessed an upswing since the visit of Italian prime minister Girogia Meloni in March. The two leaders also met during the G-20 Summit held in New Delhi in September and COP28 Summit in Dubai last month. This relationship strengthened further as a total of 15 Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) was signed covering areas including energy, media and finance.
