Train Ticket Cancelled? You May Get Zero Refund: Indian Railways Rolls Out New Rules
Indian Railways has introduced revised refund rules for confirmed tickets, and passengers need to be aware of the new timelines to avoid losing a significant portion, or even all, of their fare.
Under the updated policy, the amount refunded now depends strictly on how early a ticket is cancelled before departure.
If a confirmed ticket is cancelled more than 72 hours in advance, passengers will receive the maximum possible refund, with only a minimal cancellation fee deducted.

However, the rules become stricter as the departure time approaches.
If a ticket is cancelled between 72 hours and 24 hours before the journey, a deduction of 25% of the fare will apply. For cancellations made between 24 hours and up to 8 hours before departure, the penalty increases to 50% of the ticket fare.
The biggest change comes for last-minute cancellations.

If a confirmed ticket is cancelled less than 8 hours before departure, passengers will not receive any refund. This rule is likely to impact travellers who often make late changes to their plans.
Indian Railways has also simplified some processes.
Passengers can now cancel PRS counter tickets at any station, removing the earlier restriction of cancelling only at the originating station.
For e-tickets, the system has become more user-friendly, as the requirement to file a Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR) has been removed. Refunds will now be processed automatically without additional steps.
These changes come as part of a broader effort to streamline operations and reduce misuse of the booking system.
