At least 40 workers trapped inside the collapsed tunnel in Uttarakhand, which was under construction. The tragical incident occurred on Sunday early morning around 4 am, as the tunnel meant to connect Silkyara to Dandalgaon in Uttarakhand“s Uttarkashi collapsed partially. The rescue and relief operations are underway and the workers trapped inside were reportedly contacted through walkie-talkies. The workers are all unharmed and were given food and oxygen through pipe, said the officials.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), along with police and local administration are in action and are supposed to cover approximately 60 meters to reach the trapped personnel. The tunnel is 13 metre wide and two JCBs and a Poclain machine are used to remove the debris.

“Oxygen supply is provided using temporary pipes, We are giving our best and making all possible efforts. As of now, the situation is under control and not life threatening,” The Indian Express quoted DRF Inspector Jagdamba Bijalwan. All the workers are said to be safe and oxygen is being supplied through a pipeline which was laid for supplying water in the tunnel. Food packets were also sent through the same pipeline using a compressor.

“40 people are trapped inside the tunnel. All are safe, we have provided oxygen and water to them”, said Prashant Kumar, Circle Officer of Uttarkashi on Monday to the news agency ANI. He confirmed that the authorities have established communication to the trapped personnel inside on Sunday itself. The officer added that the rescue team managed to move around 15 metres inside the tunnel and are left with at least 35 metres more to cover. “Everyone is safe, we have provided oxygen and water to them. We are making our way sideways to go inside the tunnel”, he explained.

According to the NDRF”s Assistant Commandant, Karamveer Singh Bhandari, the rescue operators are “facing a bit problem as the debris is wet”. But the “team is leaving no stone unturned and rescue is underway”, he said to ANI.
