London, UK:  While speaking at Chatham House in London on Wednesday, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar reasserted India’s position on Kashmir. During a session titled “India’s Rise and Role in the World,” Minister responded to a question regarding the steps taken by India to solve the Kashmir issue, and said that abrogation of Article 370 was first step, economic revival and high-turnout elections constituted the succeeding steps.

“In Kashmir, we have done a good job solving most of it. I think removing Article 370 was one step. Then, restoring growth, economic activity, and social justice in Kashmir was step number two. Holding elections, which were done with a very high turnout, was step number three,” Jaishankar said.

Adding further, he said that the unresolved aspect of the Kashmir issue lay outside India’s control.

“I think the part we are waiting for is the return of the stolen part of Kashmir, which is on the illegal Pakistani occupation. When that’s done, I assure you, Kashmir solved,” Minister said.

During the session, Jaishankar also talked about many issues beyond Kashmir such as US under President Donald Trump’s administration, the UK-India free trade agreement, India’s relationship with China, and also underlined the importance of the Quad alliance, which includes the US, India, Australia, and Japan.

EAM has also touched upon topics like, internationalisation of Indian rupee, the role of the US dollar in the global economy, and the stance of BRICS countries on the matter. Regarding India’s position on the dollar’s dominance, Jaishankar said: “I don’t believe there is any policy on our part to replace the dollar.” Dollar contributes to international economic stability, he added.

Minister also dispelled the notion that BRICS carry a unified stance against the dollar, stating that member-nations holds varied opinion on the matter.
