A powerful earthquake struck the coast of southern Peru. The earthquake hits at the depth of 28 kilometers, and a 7.2 magnitude, as said by United States Geological Survey (USGC). Tsunami threats from the tremor were reported to pass.
CCTV footage from the nearby town of Caraveli shows residential streets as tremor shakes violently, and people coming out of their houses. No deaths have been registered after the quake, said Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen. “We are just finishing analyzing the preliminary reports which tell us that there are no deaths, and we are monitoring the impact on infrastructures,” Adrianzen told radio RPP, according to Andina, the Peruvian news agency.

Taking to its X (formerly twitter), the Peruvian Presidency said that the government in monitoring the situation and evaluating any possible damage.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC) had earlier said that “hazardous tsunami waves are forecast for some coasts”. It said the waves could reach up to 1 to 3 meters along some coastal areas of the country. However, it later said the threats had passed.
“There is no longer tsunami threats from this earthquake”, PTWC said.
Peru lies on what is called as the Pacific Ring of Fire, a vast area of intense seismic activity that runs along the west coast of the Americas.
