A deadly earthquake of magnitude 7.4 hit Taiwan on Wednesday. At least four people were reported dead in the strongest earthquake to strike the island nation in last 25 years. The incident has prompted tsunami warning in the Taiwan, and parts of southern Japan and Philippines.

Reportedly, the quake struck at 8:00 am local time. United States Geological Survey (USGS) marked the epicentre of quake at a depth of 34.8 km, 18 kilometres (11 miles) south of Taiwanese Haulien City. As per Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration, the earthquake had a depth of 15.5 km (9.6miles).

According to Reuters, nearly people are trapped in nearly 26 buildings that were collapsed. More than half of the collapsed buildings are in Haulien. The residents of capital city of Tiawan, Teipei, said aftershocks were felt. Taiwan authorities said 25 aftershocks were recorded so far, said media reports.

Footages capturing the moment the earthquake hit the nation has been circulating on social media. Taiwanese television TaiwanPlusNews also showed footages of buildings in precarious angles after the quake.

 

 

The Japanese weather agency reported that several small tsunami waves reached parts of its southern Okinawa. Later, the weatherman downgraded the tsunami warning to an advisory and said that the quake marked 7.7 in the Ritcher scale. Seismology Agency of Philippines also issued warning for residents in coastal areas, and urged the residents of higher grounds to evacuate.

Taiwan also issued tsunami warning. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii later said that the risk of damaging tsunami waves had pass largely. Reportedly, the earthquake in Taiwan was also felt in part of China including Shanghai, Fuzhou, Xiamen, Quanzhou, and Ningde.
