The state of Gujarat continues to face massive rainfall, which has triggered a flood-like situation in the region. The flooding has claimed at least 28 lives in the past three days. Around 6,440 people have been moved from low-lying regions to safer areas as rescue efforts continue, stated Gandhinagar relief commissioner Alok Pandey, as per NDTV.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert with more rainfall expected in the coming days.

Here is a 10 pointer about the floods in Gujarat:

  1. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured all possible support and assistance from the centre to the state government in a phone call with state chief minister Bhupendra Patel.
  2. Reportedly, nearly 140 reservoirs and dams, and 24 rivers in Gujarat were flowing above the danger mark. Flight operations, train services, and traffic movement have been disrupted due to the rains.
  3. Rajkot, Kheda, Morbi, Bharuch, Ahmedabad, Mahisagar, Junagadh, and Anand are some of the most affected districts.
  4. 12 districts in the state, such as Kachchh, Jamnagar, Porbandar, Morbi, Bhavnagar, Rajkot, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Gir Somnath, Surendranagar, Botad, Amreli, and Somnath, are expected to witness extremely heavy rainfall, as per IMD.
  5. Six teams of the Army have been deployed to assist the 14 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and 22 State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams for rescue operations. The Indian Air Force and the Indian Coastal Guard have also been called in to assist with search and rescue operations.
  6. A land-based deep depression over Saurashtra and Kachchh is expected to move towards the northeast Arabian Sea, bringing more rainfall in the region, according to IMD data.
  7. On Wednesday evening, the state CM held a video conference from the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) and reviewed the rescue and relief operations in the affected regions. Patel urged officials to prioritise operations, especially in Vadodara, Jamnagar, and Devbhoomi Dwarka.
  8. “Beneficial organisations, voluntary organisations, etc. have also given necessary guidance to prepare food packets and necessary food materials for distribution to the affected people,” stated Patel in an X post.
  9. Addressing the dire situation, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi appealed to all Congress workers to provide help to those affected and the administration in relief and rescue work.
  10. Videos of crocodiles entering the city’s flooded colonies surfaced on X as the Vishwamitri river, which flows through the city, flows nine feet above the danger mark.
