After being questioned by the Mumbai Police, Mohammed Shariful Islam, aka Vijay Das (30), the Bangladeshi national arrested for the attack on actor Saif Ali Khan, reportedly crossed the Dawki River to enter India nearly seven months ago.
Based on a preliminary probe, Shariful Islam travelled to West Bengal and used an Aadhaar card of a resident there to get a SIM card before moving to Mumbai in search of a job. According to the police, the SIM card was registered in the name of ‘Khukumoni Jahangir Sekh,’ whose Aadhaar card is suspected to have been used to procure it.

Shariful Islam reportedly told the police that he studied till 12th grade in Bangladesh and has two brothers. After crossing the Dawki River on the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya, he entered India and allegedly used a fake identity as Vijay Das.
He first claimed he was a Kolkata resident, but when the police went through his cell phone, they found several calls made on Bangladeshi numbers. When the police made him call his family, they got his identity documents confirming his Bangladeshi nationality.
In Mumbai, he got housekeeping work in pubs and hotels in Worli and Thane, reported the Indian Express.
According to police officers, Shariful Islam first attempted to enter a nearby bungalow of another Bollywood actor but fled after the dogs barked at him. The trespassing attempt was captured on some CCTV footage, although the visuals are not very clear.
Citing police sources, the Indian Express reported that the accused was armed with a knife and other tools when he went to Khan’s house. After attacking the actor, he reportedly slept in a garden near a Bandra college and changed his clothes.
Following a manhunt, he was caught hiding in the mangroves in Thane at 2 am on Sunday.

The accused would be taken to the actor’s residence as part of the investigation procedure, said Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 9, Dixit Gedam.
Saif Ali Khan was stabbed six times at his residence on January 16 between 2 am and 2:30 am during a failed robbery attempt. He was taken to the Lilavati Hospital, where he underwent a surgery. A 2.5-inch knife was removed from his body. Doctors have said that the actor is stable and is out of danger.
