CM Pinarayi Vijayan Demands Rahul Mamkootathil's Resignation Over Sexual Misconduct Allegation

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala: Kerala chief minister on Wednesday reacted to the sexual misconduct allegations faced by Congress leader and Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil for the first time, demanding the resignation of the legislator. The chief minister, while referring to the alleged leaked phone recordings, assured the government would provide protection to the complainant, noting that he noticed the politician threatening the victim.

During the press conference held in Thiruvananthapuram, the chief minister highlighted that he saw the video in which the Congress MLA was seen threatening the victim with an abortion, adding that he even told the woman that it does not take much time to kill a person. “How much criminal behavior is this, not just one incident, more instances are coming out,” the chief minister added. He further highlighted that the allegations are grave and there should be detailed probe.

While demanding Mamkootathil’s resignation as Palakkad MLA, the chief minister also reprimanded opposition leader VD Satheeshan. Referring to Satheeshan’s challenge that the CPM should also fear in such matters as something big is to be revealed against its leaders, the chief minister, while laughing out at the question, said ‘let it come out’.

Following the allegations, the Congress leadership removed Mamkootathil as the party’s youth wing chief in the state. The party also suspended the MLA from its primary membership.

Though suspended from primary party position, Mamkootathil continues to be a legislator, who was elected to the assembly during the 2024 by-election in Palakkad. There are pressures for the MLA to resign, including from members within the party.
