As the death toll keeps increasing by each passing minute in the devastating landslides that struck Kerala’s Wayanad district on Tuesday, several citizens of the state have come forward to volunteer and support the victims and their families in rescue operations. Those who cannot have stepped up by preparing relief funds for the affected people.
At the same time, hate comments from right-wing social media handles have surfaced online mocking the state and those affected by the biggest landslide witnessed in Kerala in recent times.

Several online posts where visuals of the horrific landslides were posted reporting the incident encountered comments from right-wing Hindutva handles showing a gruesome and disturbing display of apathy and hatred.
Take, for instance, Tatva India’s post on the landslides on Instagram. One look at the comment section, and such comments can easily be spotted (since they have also received hundreds of likes in agreement). “Karma it is,” and “But they claim they aren’t Indian right??” and “Sarr it’s Kerala sarr. Not India,” and “Great hope they all suffer a lot let thr karma haunt them most cruel state fr animals & nature,” are just some of the vile comments under the post.

Amidst the hateful and insensitive comments, there was hope. Many came to the support of Kerala and its citizens and criticised the remarks made by the Hindutva handles. “To those entrenched in politics and communalism: We, people from Kerala, also pay taxes, and it’s our right, not your generosity. For those claiming the central government gave warnings, please educate yourselves on what the warnings were actually about. How can you behave like this during a disaster?” observed one user.
The rescue operations in Kerala’s Wayanad district resumed on Thursday morning as the death toll has increased to at least 276 with over 200 people injured. The devastating landslides that struck the hilly areas—Chooralmala and Mundakkai—near Meppadi in Wayanad. The death toll is expected to rise as more bodies are discovered.
As a netizen pointed out aptly, “When our biggest enemy is our own people.”
