Congress' Varsha Gaikwad Wins From Mumbai North central Lok Sabha constituency

Congress candidate Varsha Gaikwad won from the Mumbai North Central Lok Sabha constituency by securing 445,545 votes. She defeated her rival BJP candidate Ujjwal Nikam with a vote margin of 16,514 votes.

BJP’ candidate Ujjwal Nikam, lawyer is known for his role as the prosecutor in the 26/11 attack case. He has been a key figure in several famous court cases and has worker over 14 years in the special court established under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities.

Meanwhile, Congress’ fielded Varsha Gaikwad, the daughter of veteran leader Eknath Gaikwad. She serves as the member of the legislative assembly from Mumbai’s Dharawi and is also the President of Mumbai Regional Congress Committee. She has made her mark in Maratha politics by winning the assembly election from Dharavi. Though she opted to contest the election from Mumbai South Central, where her father was elected as the MP, the party decided to field her in Mumbai central.

Mumbai north central has seen a fluctuating political landscape. The victories have altered between BJP, Congress and Shiv Sena and Republic Party of India (RPI) candidates. In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, BJP’s Poonam Mahajan emerged victorious from the constituency with 478,535 votes. He defeated Congress Priya Sunit Dutt who has received 291,764 votes in the election.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, Poonam Mahajan once again won the seat by garnering 486,672 votes, defeating the National Congress Party’s Priya Dutt. She has secured 356,667 votes.

The trend shows that the Maha Vikas Agadhi has toppled the exit poll results and is leading in the state sweeping majority of the seats.
