Flagging the travel concerns for NEET aspirants in the state, Kerala MPs Shashi Tharoor, Anto Anthony, Hibi Eden, and Benny Behanan met Union Health Minister JP Nadda, appealing to him to review and rectify the NEET PG exam centres and set up centres in Kerala. With exam centres being far away for candidates from the state, they have to travel a long way to attend the test scheduled for August 11.

In the letter submitted to the Union Minister, the MPs said that  many candidates from Kerala were allocated exam centres in Vishakhapatnam and Hyderabad among other places, noting that the aspirants will not get railway or air tickets, making it costly from them to attend the test.

The MPs also highlighted the recent Wayanad landslides as logistical challenges in addition to the financial burdens for candidates to travel to Andhra Pradesh and other nearby states for the examination.

Congress Thiruvandanapuram MP, Shashi Tharoor, said that there have been numerous complaints from various areas. The new issue has arisen with NEET PG, where most candidates from Kerala have been allotted centres in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, instead of Kerala or neighbouring states, the Congress leader said, adding that the aspirants’ concerns raise questions about the country’s ability to conduct exams efficiently.

“I, along with other Kerala MPs, have met with Union Minister JP Nadda to discuss this. The entire NEET system, whether for UG or PG, needs to be reconsidered to ensure a better and more humane approach,” news agency ANI cited Shashi Tharoor.

Since the examination body released the exam centres, several students in Kerala took to their social media platforms, expressing their frustration over as far as  1000 km or above distances from their homes to the exam centres. The outcry to change the exam centres to at least nearby states has been doing rounds on social media.

It is reported that many students were allotted to Andhra Pradesh for the examination. The application had four options, with three in the home states and one mandatory choice in Andhra Pradesh.

Earlier, some other MPs such as John Brittas and Adoor Prakash had brought the attention of the student’s grievances to the Union Ministers.
