Thirsty For Blessings: Devotees Mistake AC Water For Holy Drink At Mathura Temple

Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh: Devotees at the Banke Bihari Mandir in Uttar Pradesh‘s Mathura Vrindavan lined up near an elephant sculpture to drink water dripping from it, believing it to be ‘Charan Amrit’ or holy water from the feet of Lord Krishna. Little did they know that the dripping water was not sacred but discharge from the temple’s air conditioning system.

The viral video shows several devotees queuing up to get a sip of the seemingly “holy” water with paper cups while others extended their hands to get a few drops. A report in Jagran stated that the water came from elephant-shaped tubes that are integrated into the temple’s architecture.

The person recording the video can be heard informing some of the people that they were drinking AC water. Despite the warning, several devotees continued to drink or splash themselves with the AC discharge.

With over 3.8 million views on social media platform X, the viral video opened up discussion with many netizens wondering the lack of scientific temperament and questioned their gullibility. “A mind without scientific temper is the birthplace of myths, superstition, hate, division. It’s a threat to democracy and promotes herd mentality.”

Another X user pointed out, “At least the temple trust could have put a notice there cautioning people.”

The Liver Doc also issued a warning note, cautioning against drinking AC water. “Cooling and air conditioning systems are breeding grounds for many types of infections including fungus, some really hellish,” he wrote.

A similar incident occurred in Mumbai in 2012 when water began to drip from the feet of a statue of crucified Jesus called the Weeping Crucifix. Hundreds gathered to witness the “miracle,” only to find out that the dripping water came from a faulty sewage system.
