Sam Altman, the former CEO of OpenAI, is reportedly in discussions with the OpenAI board about returning to the company as its CEO. The Verge reported that Sam Altman is “ambivalent” about a potential return to OpenAI and would also want major governance changes. Sam Altman, the man behind the AI-powered chatbots ChatGPT and GPT-4, was sacked by OpenAI”s board of directors on Friday, November 17.

The OpenAI board is under heavy pressure since taking the controversial decision to remove Sam Altman. Hours after Altman was sacked, OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman also announced his departure from the company. Other staff members are also reportedly willing to resign and follow Altman and Brockman to other projects. Meanwhile, The Information, citing sources, reported that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman joined executives at the company’s San Francisco headquarters on Sunday. The report also revealed that OpenAI interim CEO Mira Murati and other top executives have been leading the push to get Altman reinstated as OpenAI CEO. Meanwhile, a post by Sam Altman on his X handle has sparked speculation about his possible return. “I love the openai team so much,” wrote Altman on his X handle on November 19.

The Information also reported that Microsoft, OpenAI’s biggest investor, may join the company”s board of directors if Sam Altman returns as CEO. The tech giant is considering either joining OpenAI”s board of directors or becoming a board observer without voting rights. Meanwhile, the publication also reported that Sam Altman is also considering starting a new artificial intelligence venture. On November 17, OpenAI said in a statement that Sam Altman was removed from the leadership role as he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board. The company also clearly mentioned that the board no longer has confidence in Sam Altman”s ability to continue leading OpenAI, the market leader in artificial intelligence technology.
