CBSE Clarifies Over Hindustan Times Report Over Twice A Board Exams

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a clarification on the social media ‘X’ regarding a news article covered in the Hindustan Times (HT) -Delhi edition dated July 30, 2024. CBSE denied the imputation in the news article entitled ‘Cannot conduct Board Exams twice a year: CBSE’ written by Fareeha Iftikhar and said the information regarding communication between the education ministry and CBSE was incorrect.

CBSE said via X, “This is in reference to the news article covered in Hindustan Times – Delhi edition dated 30/06/2024 titled- `Cannot conduct Board Exams twice a year: CBSE’ (Fareeha Iftikhar). A few other news media have also covered similar news story. The imputation in this news item as regards CBSE’s views in the matter being raised therein is denied. It is totally incorrect and does not have any basis in any communication made between the Ministry and CBSE”.

The news article published by the Hindustan Times, claimed to have insider information about CBSE’s new board exam policy, obtained from one of the officials who declined to be named. As per the article, the CBSE informed the education ministry that the board couldn’t conduct class 10 and 12 board exams twice a year.

The arctile said that the board presented the scenario to the ministry during a meeting on the National Curriculum Framework 2023 on June 25 at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The event is reported to be attended by hundreds fo principals of schools affiliated with the CBSE. The framework which in line with the National Education Policy (NEP ) 2020 recommended that students must be allowed to appear for the board examination twice a year, and the best score should be retined.

The HT earlier reproted on April 27 that the education ministry had asked the board to prepare a road map for exams twice a year. The education minister Dharmendra Pradhan in February said the plan is likely to be implemented from the 2025-26 session.

As per the official insights, the board informed the ministry that the board examination process is a tedious process which requires multiple involvment in a single exam process including filling of the list of candidates, centre notifications, relase of roll numbers, conduct of practicals, theory exams, result declaration, verification and revaluttion. The CBSE prepares over 4,000 question papers and 200,000 questions are pepared and about 2.5 crore answer sheets are evaluated.

In addition the board informed that teachers are also involved in the examiantion process for about 55 days and an additon 15-20 days for evalauation. The date of competitive exams, holidays, and gaps between exams, supplementary exams etc are also considered while exams are conducted.

As per the article, the official said that it was the first of many consultation where stakeholders expressed opinions about the implementation of the framework.

Reportedly the twice a year board exam formula is reduce the pressure from students however, the ministry has asked the schools for their suggestions to implement it.
