Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala: Dr Sherly Vasu, Kerala’s pioneering first female forensic surgeon, died at the age of 68 on Wednesday, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in forensic medicine. She was found in a critical condition at her residence in Kozhikode and was rushed to a hospital, but her life could not be saved, reported Manorama News. Preliminary reports suggest that a heart attack was the cause of her death.

Dr Vasu carved a distinguished career, becoming a trailblazer as the state’s first woman forensic surgeon. During her tenure in government service, which concluded with her retirement in 2016, she played a pivotal role in solving numerous high-profile cases that captured public attention. Her meticulous approach and expertise earned her widespread respect in the field.

After retiring, Dr Vasu continued her service as the head of the forensic department at a private medical college in Mukkam, Kozhikode, where she remained an influential figure until her passing.

Renowned for conducting approximately 20,000 post-mortems, Dr Vasu’s contributions extended beyond the autopsy table. Her book, Post-Mortem Table, offered an insightful glimpse into her experiences and became widely acclaimed for its candid exploration of forensic science.

Sherly Vasu completed her MBBS from the Kottayam Medical College in 1979 and went on to pursue her post-graduate studies at Kozhikode MC. Vasu started her career in forensic medicine in 1981, and she received a fellowship by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for advanced training.
