Kerala Becomes First To Achieve Total Digital Literacy

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has announced that the state has become the first to achieve total digital literacy. The state government is now waiting for the confirmation from the President of India to make the official announcement. The Digi Kerala was launched as pilot initiative in 2022 in Pullampara gram panchayat of Thiruvananthapuram.

And under this initiative, the trainees had taught the users of the platform on how to make voice and video calls using smartphones, to use WhatsApp and access the government services. Moreover, they have also taught the individuals how to use Internet banking and even popular social media platforms.

Following its success, the programme was later extended across the state, with 21.88 lakh participants being identified illiterate through surveys conducted in wards. For this, over 2.57 lakh volunteers coordinated to organize classes for the participants.

“We have achieved much beyond the guidelines stipulated by the National Digital Literacy Mission for digital literacy, which require training to be imparted only for those up to 60 years of age. This programme has included people of all ages,” The Hindu quoted Kerala’s Local Self Government (LSG) minister M.B. Rajesh, as saying.

An official who had coordinated the training programme stated that, after the the completion of the  training programme, the trainees were evaluated and they have found that over 98% participants passed the evolution. “Third party verification was done by the Statistics department to ensure that the figures are accurate. In wards in which over 10% variation was seen, re-training was conducted. Offline training was provided in areas of low connectivity,” he added.
