Tamil Nadu Woman Dies By Suicide After Social Media Friend Uploads Private Videos Online

Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu: In Tamil Nadu’s  Tenkasi district, a 26-year-old woman from Maruthamputhur village died by suicide on Tuesday, after a social media frined reportedly uploaded her private videos online. The social media frined had purportedly used the personal videos and photos to blackmail and sexually abuse the woman.

According to the police, the accused man, 35-year-old Sakthivel from Kurumbalaperi village near Pavoorchatram befrineded the victim through Instagram. The man then recorded the woman’s private photos and videos, and used them later to blackmail her for sexual favours. He also extracted Rs 3 lakh from her by threatening to release them online.

The victim then infomed her parents about the incident who filed a complaint with the All Women Police Station in Alangulam a few days ago. Though the police made the accused person to delete the videos and photos from his device at that time, the video reemerged online a few days ago, which caused extreme emotional distress to the woman, leading to her suicide.

A few other locals had also access to the alleged private videos and they had also started harassing her, forcing the victim to end her life. In her sucide note that the police recovered from her room, she had named Sakthivel (the main accused), Murugesan, Muthuraj, her father-in-law, and Sakthivel’s wife for pushing her to take the extreme step, The New Indian Express reported, citing sources.

The woman was married to a man seven years ago, and the couple had no children. They were livig seperately due to some frequent quarels. The woman was staying at her grandparents’ home located in the same village.
